This has several aims:

> Increasing health
> Reducing local traffic congestion, pollution and parking problems
> Diversifying the visitor attractions of the Abersoch area
> Promoting the Llyn Coastal Path and the local environment of the surrounding AONB.

Grants for 2008/09 were secured from the Sustainable Development Fund of the Llyn AONB (Gwynedd Council), as wells as from Sports

Council Wales. We are working closely with the Abersoch Tourist Information Office (TIC) and local businesses which have provided generous sponsorship.

The project has four main components:

1. Improve publicity regarding availability of footpaths and walks
2. Improve footpath route signing, way marking and condition
3. Pilot a programme of guided walks
4. Develop a pilot audio trail

The project is building on  the framework of the excellent 2006 booklet ‘Teithiau Cerdded Abersoch’ which  describes six local walks covering about 30 miles around Abersoch, including sections of the Coastal Path system. The booklet is available from the TIC. Leaflets and posters have been produced and widely distributed to promote these walks and footpaths.

Information display boards have been procured for focal points in the village to provide information on footpath location, guided walks and other walk-related activities. One is located outside Londis/Talafon in the centre of the village,  another in the Lôn Golff beach car park, and a third in a lay-by on the main road between Llanbedrog and Abersoch.

We are working directly with the Dwyfor footpath officer to identify and implement local footpath improvements. At present we are focusing on improving way marking and signing.  We hope to secure more funding soon to provide some improved footpath furniture (kissing gates, stiles, boardwalks).

Guided Walks
A programme of guided walks was mounted during the peak
holiday season in August. These offered a range of walks of varying length and difficulty led by four SAC members. Two were held in conjunction with local walking groups. We are now reviewing this experience  to determine what role guided walks should play in future. We also intend to provide an umbrella role in promoting
local walks involving other walking groups.  A second walks programme is scheduled for the first week of May 2009.

Audio Trail
A pilot audio trail has been developed based on local contributions for the content and narration. Many thanks to all who contributed. This provides information on local history, landscape and features
of general interest, as well as detailed route directions, for a 4-7 mile walk around Abersoch, including an optional detour to Porth Ceiriad. The audio trail may be downloaded in the form of mp3 files for use in an ipod or mp3 player from www.audioguide2go.com.

The website includes a map of the trail based on Google Earth. A sketch map is also available, click here. There are also temporary stickers marking points along the route. A Welsh version of the trail is also available.

A booklet of the audio trail script will also be on sale soon through the TIC.
